Inspired by the movie Drive, Harlem MC Kyle Rapps teams up with producer Diwon to create Tyrone Gosling, a free EP which incorporates audio from 80s crime movies into an interesting 5-track addition to your download folder.
A project that capably embraces swirling synths and retro 1980s feel on “Night Call,” and “Under Your Spell,” with highlights like the spacey thump of “Tick of the Clock,” Tyrone Gosling is an experimental-sounding, concept project that might have needed a few more tracks to truly become a standout project, but for what it attempts to do, the result is solid. While the audience for this might be a little more niche than Rapps’ prior projects, there’s nothing wrong with testing different musical waters. Diwon’s production is clean and at times intricate, while Kyle Rapps melds his vocals to the vibe of the tracks well.
