Marvin would not approve. OMG, when did Marvin become a saint?

When he was sniffing smack? Marvin is dead. Move on. His father has.

And are we comparing Marvin to Chris in any way? When has Chris shown himself to be a real RNB singer? He's a pop singer who on occasion puts out an RNB or urban single, but Chris has always been pop.

And I'm not mad at him. There is no money in RNB and there is no pride in being poor. The house he has in Virginia that cost him 1.5 million probably reminds him of that everyday. RNB is dead.

And its because we as blacks don't buy it anymore? So why should he only put out RNB when it clearly doesn't pay his bills like his pop songs do?

Birthplace Mag!! Thank U!! If a R n B singer decides to put a Rap song out in the middle of his R & B record, It, as well as He, will still be labeled/sold, under the title, R & B!! & Yes, it is some Bull Shit!! Niggas ain't got nuttin to talk about except they $$ & Fuckin!! WTH?? Chris's new shit is Lame, just like the rest of these wack ass, no talent having R & NO B artist. There are some exceptions, very few though, but the route Chris is taken is the typical one, $/sales, over quality/musicality. & as someone stated above, "its a fun club song" ?? WTF??? Since when does having a fun club song justify it being a BS/Stupid Lyric/no musical anything, song?? P-Funks " Flashlight " has been around for over 3 decades, & it is highly considered a musical masterpiece in the musicians community, & it STILL gets the club jumping, young & old!!! Chris is a VERY talented young man, it's really sad to see him putting out this BS!! it's beneath him..........but when the main requirement for having a hit is having whatever big named hip hop artist rap on ur song, & the beat makes the strippers get extra nasty, then integrity/musicality/meaning/emotion etc..., goes out the window!!! So Sad................

No you wouldn't. And besides, I never said it was an R&B song. You all said I did. I didn't. I said this was some 'R&B shit'. Having a singer start rapping (poorly) and saying the nonsense he says, is some shit I personally think is lame.
In reply to <a href="https://www.birthplacemag.com/2011/01/angie-martinez-look-at-me-now-video/#comment-4300">Neickha</a>.

Hey Neickha, thanks for your comment. While you're right, it's technically not an R&B song, believe me, Marvin would not approve.

It shouldn't amuse you that people take things so seriously, because real music journalism has deep tradition in criticism. That being said, this "blog" is not mere opinion (you should look more into what we do), but yes, this particular post was briefly injected with my opinion, which I am entitled to. Still, I noted the fact that it is indeed a song that is good for the club, so even in criticizing it, I'm not denying it has it's place. But so you don't think of me as merely a "hater," I will explain my viewpoint.

Having "it's place" doesn't mean it's "good" by any stretch. The beat is rather childish, Busta's flair works, though he ain't saying nothing, Wayne is better than that, and Brown's part was the worst bunch of lines I've heard in a while. Some of us who are really into hip hop music, not just the stuff on the radio or 106 and Park, simply don't really like watered down bullshit.

The answer to your quiz would be B I guess. I have no problem with Chris Brown per se. Couldn't care too much about his tabloid issues, and for the most part, he makes good music. But with a (mediocre) spit game, with charming lyrical gems like "she accidentally slip, fall on my dick, oops I said on my dick, I didn't mean to say on my dick, but since we're talking about my dick, all my haters say hi to it..." I mean, really? Maybe better than Soulja Boy, but that ain't saying much.

Not to mention, my daughter likes Chris Brown. She's 12. I would think a woman beater who is trying to repair his public image could do better than this, especially when 12 year old girls still admire him. So yeah, I have issue with Chris Brown's asinine lyrics, and childish spit game. Noticing that once he got past the charges, and the Larry King, and the apology songs, now he's on this shit? I still like the guy and wish him well, but I think he's playing himself.

I've heard his other spit attempts. He's mediocre. Good enough to get by in today's world I suppose, but Neickha, I listen to LYRICISTS in hip hop, Homeboy Sandman, Joe Budden, Eminem, Jay-Z even ... So really, it's only right for me to recognize Chris Brown's rapping as sub-par, especially in comparison to cats like this. It doesn't make me a hater, it makes me an intellectual.

And don't worry, I have plenty fun. I'll go and shake my ass to the most ignorant songs on the radio with the best of them, but, when it comes time to put e-pen to e-paper and analyze the quality of a particular song, I have no problem detailing why I call it how I see it. We all should, instead of being hypnotized by repeated radio play until we like something that we really shouldn't like.

But maybe you're right, maybe I should just have a little fun, accept Chris Brown's sexual Dr. Suess rhymes and casio keyboard music as the best that our young artists can do, as the best that radio programmers can deliver.

But while I'll be happily dancing in the club, it sure will be a depressing musical world when I'm sober.
