"As such, it remains unclear to those deeply vested in the independent and underground hip hop music universe how WKCR can possibly honor the pledge to continue “the legacy that began twenty years ago,” when any representation from that reign has been effectively dismissed. Show advocates insist that “preservation and proliferation” of such a carefully cultivated conduit of hip hop music and culture, cannot be accomplished without a seasoned connection to the community that no rookie broadcasters could hope to achieve. “Telling listeners that ‘Squeeze Radio is continuing, just with different hosts,’” says Jay Smooth, “only adds insult to injury.”

[...] First let’s address what’s wrong with this piece of correspondence. “Squeeze Radio has not ended.” Well, that’s the first mistake, as the University should have simply ended it if they were going to give Sucio the boot. This opens the door to arguments of , “well, the students won’t be able to carry on the legacy as well as someone as qualified as Sucio Smash! It will only be disappointment from here on out!” The second issue is their fact checking, as Bobbito was never a Columbia student, only Stretch was, which doesn’t do much for the point they’re trying to make (see Stretch’s correction of Birthplace Mag’s story on the issue here). Apologies to Stretch, that quote was from a separate email where I was just ranting, and didn't realize it was on record or I would've double checked my memory of it (my fault for not being clear on that, not blaming the writer).

Still, obviously you were not a student for a large portion of the show's run, so the basic point still stands.

The best of hip hop has long been over. There is no longer any point to it. It is time to stop extolling it for fear of offending its supporters. I would shorten the show to two hours and most, but allow the existing staff to make star appearances if the students want to. That should be their prerogative. This is an example of typical highhanded Columbia behavior, much like its attitude towards the gym. The value of having Sucio Smash is the good will he creates for Columba, which many regard as arrogant and insensitive to the needs of parts of the community without wealth and power. Getting rid of him is just plain stupid. Richard Cummings, Law '62
