The hip hop love for Travis Barker, the Blink-182 drummer known for releasing audio and video of him fiercely drumming along to current rap songs, is an interesting phenomenon. An incredible percussive talent, he’s definitely adds a bit of flair to songs such as the Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem track “Forever,” and has made a good name for himself outside of rock circles doing so.
Now, off of his long-awaited “non-genre” album, Give The Drummer Some, Travis Barker enlists hip hop heavyweights to help his cause, placing Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Swizz Beatz and The Game for “Can A Drummer Get Some,” over a thoroughly rock-infused track. A decent mash-up-sounding effort, the verses may have fallen just a bit short of the energy that the track is attempting to create. Although Swizz Beatz is the reason this song falls in our NY-area editorial jurisdiction, he is relegated to the role of semi-annoying chorus hype man, where he often ends up lately, and adds nothing of value to the song, while Wayne, Game and Rozay do their best to hold the track together.
All in all, pretty much what one might expect from a blending of musical styles to this degree, though it seems that to be safe, and attempt to appeal to both rock and rap factions with this effort, the result might be that neither ends up satisfied.
Other hip hop acts slated for Give The Drummer Get Some include Slaughterhouse, RZA and Raekwon. Give The Drummer Some is expected to drop February 22, 2011.
And if the titles are all to be taken literally, then yes, apparently a drummer can indeed get some.
