Dead Prez, the veteran political and socially minded group consisting of M-1 and stic.man, have joined with DJ Drama for an upcoming mixtape release, Revolutionary But Gangsta Grillz. In the mixtape’s first leask, “Far From Ova,” the storied MCs fervently touch upon their feelings toward mainstream hip hop music and the lack of focus on issues truly important to the African-American community and culture.
Dead Prez has always had an ardent fan base and have never wavered from their “somewhere between N.W.A. and P.E.” mentality, spitting intellectual, emotional and emphatic criticisms of social and corporate injustice. As their storied music career continues, hopefully the push of the DJ Drama/Gangsta Grillz brand will propel them in front of an even larger audience, and allow new heads to familiarize themselves with the group, deservedly so.
Revolutionary But Gangsta Grillz is due out June 22 (according to Mr. X).
