Diggy Simmons burst out of the Reality TV scene, on to the hip hop scene in a big way when his freestyle video “Made You Look“, rhymed over the Nas hit of the same name, hit the internet. Shortly thereafter, the son of Rev. Run and nephew of impresario Russell Simmons, secured himself a deal with Atlantic Records.
While the young rapper, and his famous father, are both quick to downplay any possible nepotism in achieving this deal, Diggy Simmons can actually spit, as evidenced in “Made You Look”. “What They Been Waiting For” is a track from Diggy’s upcoming mixtape Airborne. His previous mixtape, The First Flight, which was largely unnoticed until the breakout freestyle came along, can still be downloaded at http://illroots.com/2009/12/02/diggy-the-first-flight/.
In any event, “What They Been Waiting For” starts with a drumline, stabbing brass collegiate band intro, which gets flipped into a mid-tempo, punchy beat. Diggy doesn’t vary much from the vocal style of his previous efforts, and while this is less emphatic as “Made You Look”, it’s still a listenable, noddable track from the young spitter.
Still need more to judge whether Diggy can be a force with longevity in the game. He seems to be playing it safe with this release, so we’ll have to see what the full project will deliver in terms of risk-taking and how far he will initially go to establishing himself as a talent to be reckoned with, now that he’s still got people’s attention.
