On the wake of our investigation into the charity mentioned in the now-infamous Guru “farewell letter to friends,” HipHopDX spoke in great detail to Tasha Denham, an ex-employee of 7 Grand Records, and personal friend of Guru during his years partnered with Solar. The interview covers many areas of the life she witnessed as a friend, and employee, including shocking and disturbing allegations of physical and mental abuse at the hands of Solar, and the following of a purposeful path away from DJ Premier and the Gang Starr affiliation.
Ms. Denham forlornly reminisces about the way the Gang Starr legacy was handled behind the scenes by Guru and his new music partner, including receiving orders to instruct press that Gang Starr-related questioning was off limits during interviews. She echoes many speculations regarding a highly abnormal and manipulative business relationship, one which Solar sought to control with an iron fist.
Most eye-opening were Ms. Denham’s recollections of fist-fights between the two, that she characterizes as Solar “beating” Guru, on one occasion causing Guru to suffer an asthma attack, and another incident where Guru allegedly had a tooth knocked out by Solar. While she vehemently denies any knowledge of any romantic relationship between the two, as the incessant rumor mill has suggested, she characterizes Solar as an extremely controlling figure in Guru’s life, and the examples given offer a compelling insight at what may have been an extremely disturbing relationship between the two men over several years working together, leading to the tragic course of events in recent months.
