In the New York-area hip-hop scene, there is definitely a contingency of female wordsmiths causing their share of underground buzz. One of them is Mala Reignz, who has been on our radar since we re-started BirthplaceMag.com earlier last year. Until the time that we cross paths and can orchestrate a full-on interview, etc., we will be admiringly stalking following Ms. Reignz from the comfort of my house the Birthplace Magazine office.
OK, all sort-of-jokes aside, this petite purveyor of powerful poetry is definitely worth checking out, if you are unfamiliar. She just dropped her own she-style* over Rhianna’s “Russian Roulette” track, and while Joe Budden’s is still my personal fave, Mala’s esta buenisimo in my book.

Download/Listen: Mala Reignz – Russian Roulette [She-Style]
* We try and stay pure in our hip-hop terminology, so a freestyle to us, is a crafted on-the-spot creation. We wanted a better term to describe a prefabricated vocal over an already established beat, and came up with “he-style”, or, as in this case, a “she-style”… We still have yet to determine what we will call it when it’s two people. They-style? Not as catchy. Sigh. We’ll worry about that later.

Mala Reignz is definitely something serious. I agree that Budden had the better “he-style” but Mala put a hurting on this beat too.
