Despite Uncle Jay supposedly suggesting otherwise, Ramel “Mel” Carter is attempting to extend the S. Carter reign in hip-hop, releasing his full-length debut album Certified as a free download.
We peeped the leaked single “The Message” that’s been floating around. It’s OK. Don’t know if nephew got what it takes… then again, we wouldn’t have exactly pegged Jay as a future hip-hop God the first time we saw/heard him either (Hawaiian Sophie…)
So, we’ll just have to give some more of the album a listen before we can call it. Hey! Let’s do it together, shall we?

And for you press release fans:
On September 29, 2009, JAY-Z’s nephew Ramel “MEL” Carter released his first free downloadable album “CERTIFIED.” Delivery can be picked up at http://www.datpiff.com/MEL_Certified.m68728.html
As Mel signs, seals and delivers his first project “Certified,” his plans are to continue the Carter legacy of fine music and undeniable entrepreneurship. 8 of the 19 tracks on the album were produced in-house by his childhood friend Julien “J DOT” Cross whom Mel met when he moved to New Jersey. Also featurig NE-YO’s newest songwriter SAM HOOK, signed under Compound University, and Mel’s cousin/labelmate (Ty Ty’s nephew) FLY RAH.
ABOUT MEL
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY before settling down in West Orange, NJ– Mel chose the path to become a rapper. Mel recalls listening to his uncle Jay and absorbing Jay’s every movement, lyrics and bar. By 1997, after watching his uncle Jay-Z “Ain’t No N****” video, Mel began to focus on turning his poetry into music. He never spoke much about his passion for writing until he turned 16 and told his cousins Spank and Fly Rah about one day stepping into the studio. Little did he know, they were on the same trek and decided to form their label, Natural Born Hustlaz Entertainment.1. Intro
